🍂 When We Went: October in Copenhagen

We visited Copenhagen in October, right at the start of winter. Over our 3 days, the weather was a bit of a mixed bag. One day was super windy 🌬️, and the other two days were lovely, so we saved the castles for those.

One seasonal tip if you're planning your own trip: the ferry ride on the lake at Frederiksborg Castle closes after 15 September. We visited in October, so we missed it. If you travel earlier in the season, don't skip it!

🎟️ Copenhagen Card & Public Transport

We used the Copenhagen Card, and it made the whole trip easier. It covers most of the main tourist attractions and includes free public transport, so we never had to think about buying a ticket every time we boarded a train, metro or bus.

Honestly, Copenhagen has one of the best public transport systems in the world 🚆. It's clean, smooth and easy to use, even for first-timers. That matters a lot here, because two of the three castles are day trips outside the city.

🏰 Kronborg Castle: Our Absolute Favourite

If we had to pick one castle from our Copenhagen trip, it would be Kronborg, without a second thought. Some castles are nice to look at and quick to walk through. Kronborg is one you actually experience.

An Interactive Castle, Not Just a Walkthrough

What makes Kronborg special is how interactive it is. You're not just reading plaques and moving from room to room. There's always something to do, see or learn, which kept us engaged for the full two hours.

The highlight for us was the dark cave in the basement. It's super thrilling, and a little spooky in the best way. If you visit Kronborg, don't skip it. It's a must-experience, and it was easily one of the most memorable parts of our whole castle trip.

Kronborg also offers free guided tours, where you learn about the castle's history. We liked that the tours made the history easy to follow, which isn't always the case at historic sites. If your timing works out, join one.

When we visited, a special event was going on, and we got to try on royal dresses. It was a lot of fun, and it made our visit feel even more special. Events like this may not run all the time, so check Kronborg's official website before you go if this is something you'd like to experience.

Yes, absolutely. It takes about 1.5 hours to get there from Copenhagen, but with the Copenhagen Card and free public transport the journey is easy and comfortable. We spent about 2 hours at the castle, and we'd gladly go back.

If you're visiting only one castle outside Copenhagen, choose Kronborg. It's amazing.

Is Kronborg Worth the Trip?

👑 Rosenborg Castle: Crown Jewels in the Heart of the City

Rosenborg is the only one of our three castles that sits inside Copenhagen, which makes it the easiest to fit into your trip. If you're staying only in the city, this is the castle you can comfortably cover.

Famous for the Treasury and Crown Jewels

Rosenborg is best known for its treasury and crown jewels, and it's a definitely good place to visit. Seeing the real royal jewellery up close was the highlight for us.

The best part is that the jewellery is still used today. That makes it feel like a living piece of history, not just something behind glass.

Another thing we loved is where the castle stands. Rosenborg is set in the King's Garden, so you can enjoy a relaxed walk around it before or after your visit. It's a nice break in a busy city day.

We spent about 1 hour inside, and that was enough. Because it's short and right in the city, you can easily pair it with other Copenhagen sights on the same day.

How Much Time Do You Need?

Yes. It's a smaller visit than Kronborg or Frederiksborg, but the crown jewels and the garden setting make it well worth the 120 DKK entry. If you have limited time in Copenhagen, make this your castle pick.

Is Rosenborg Worth It?

🌿 Frederiksborg Castle: A Castle in the Middle of a Lake

Frederiksborg is built in the middle of a lake, and that setting is what makes it special. It's the third castle on our list, and a good pick if you love scenic spots and gardens.

A Castle Surrounded by Water

The castle sits on a lake, which makes it look beautiful from the outside. Overall it's a good castle, and the setting adds a lot to the visit.

For us, the gardens were the best part. They're amazing, and worth setting aside time for. Walk around slowly and enjoy the views, especially with the lake as the backdrop.

The Museum: Just Okay

The Gardens Are Amazing 🌷

There's a museum inside the castle, but it was okay, not a highlight. If you're short on time, this is the part you can move through quickly and spend more time outdoors.

If you visit before 15 September, you can take a ferry ride on the lake. The ferry is closed in the winter season, after 15 September. We visited in October, so we missed it. If you're planning your trip earlier in the year, add it to your list.

We spent about 2 hours here, with an entry ticket of 115 DKK per person. That was enough to see the castle, the museum and the gardens without rushing.

Is Frederiksborg Worth It?

Yes, especially if you enjoy gardens and lake views. But if you have time for only one castle outside Copenhagen, we'd still choose Kronborg. Frederiksborg is a lovely add-on if you have the time.

✨ Final Thoughts

Copenhagen gave us a perfect mix of royal history, scenic views and fun experiences. Each castle was different, and each one left us with its own memory.

Rosenborg gave us the royal crown jewels in the middle of the city. Frederiksborg gave us a beautiful castle on a lake, with amazing gardens. Kronborg gave us the thrill of the dark basement cave, free guided tours and a chance to try on royal dresses.

If you only have time for one, pick Rosenborg if you're staying in the city, or Kronborg if you can travel out. Kronborg was our favourite, and we'd happily go back.
